Luna Rossa’s victory in the second Preliminary Regatta along Naples’ Caracciolo waterfront highlights the city’s hosting capabilities.

The America’s Cup moved closer to Italy after Luna Rossa secured a decisive win in the second Preliminary Regatta, while Naples demonstrated its ability to host a major global sporting event. Held along the city’s Caracciolo waterfront, the competition served as both a test of Naples’ readiness and a showcase of its capacity to deliver an international regatta. This marks the first time in history the America’s Cup will take place in Italy, and early indications suggest Naples is prepared for the challenge.

Over three days, Naples transformed into an open-air venue. More than 200,000 spectators gathered along the shore, filling the Gulf of Naples with boats ranging from race support vessels to private yachts. The Race Village on the lungomare remained accessible to the public, blending hospitality with the competitive atmosphere. Organizers highlighted this as a model for integrating sport, tourism, and urban life. The event’s backdrop—Castel dell’Ovo and Mount Vesuvius—enhanced the spectacle, turning the regattas into a visually striking experience beyond standard sailing competitions.

Beyond the racing, the America’s Cup Partnership, led by CEO Marzio Perrelli, is restructuring the event to ensure long-term commercial viability. Perrelli, who previously worked in finance at Goldman Sachs and HSBC before joining Sky Italia, framed the regatta as part of a strategy to establish the America’s Cup as a recurring, high-profile asset.

The commercial expansion is already in motion. Alongside its title partnership with Louis Vuitton, the event has secured sponsorships from MSC Crociere as the Global Cruises Partner and UniCredit as a banking partner. These deals reflect the America’s Cup’s transformation into a platform that blends luxury, technology, and finance, aligning with its modern identity.

Naples plays a central role in this evolution. While the lungomare will host the races, the city’s Bagnoli area is being redeveloped as a technical and operational hub. The Italian government has allocated €1.218 billion for the regeneration of Bagnoli-Coroglio, with the America’s Cup serving as a catalyst for broader urban development. Plans include permanent infrastructure, such as a paddock where fans can interact with teams and technology. Perrelli envisions a dual experience: high-tech bases in Bagnoli paired with the spectacle unfolding in the city center.

Luna Rossa dominated the regatta, winning both fleet races on the final day and defeating Emirates Team New Zealand in the match race. Though the AC40 boats used here do not count toward the 2027 America’s Cup points, the victory signals confidence ahead of next year’s AC75 competition. Key sailors Peter Burling, Marco Gradoni, Maria Giubilei, and Gianluigi Ugolini delivered a strong performance.

The regatta also served as a trial run for Naples. The city’s ability to attract large crowds, integrate racing into daily life, and prepare infrastructure sets the stage for 2027. The next challenge involves scaling up to include the Louis Vuitton Cup and the final match beginning on July 10, 2027.
