On Thursday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said he was optimistic about Mongla Port’s modernisation. He believes the upgrades will turn the facility into a busy economic hub. This would create new opportunities for trade, investment, and industrial growth. The focus would be on the country’s southwestern and northwestern regions.

Project overview

In a ceremony held in Bagerhat, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Tk 4,068 crore Mongla Port Expansion and Modernisation Project, marking a significant milestone in the port’s development.

According to Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony, the ceremony commenced at approximately 11:15am, with the project entailing the construction of two container jetties and associated infrastructure development.

Upon completion, the project will enable container trains to travel directly from Dhaka’s Kamalapur Inland Container Depot to Mongla Port, thereby enhancing the port’s potential as a major import-export hub.

Regional economic objectives

The Prime Minister envisioned the expansion of economic activities across Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, and Jashore, with the port serving as a central hub.

The government aims to enhance road connectivity from Panchagarh to Mongla, while also developing the port’s supply chain and cargo transportation facilities, and prioritising the development and operation of Khan Jahan Ali Airport.

Investment and environmental considerations

The Prime Minister stated that the modernisation project would contribute to the strengthening of the country’s industry, trade, and economic security, generating sustainable socio-economic value through employment creation, investor confidence, and balanced regional development.

Tarique stressed the need for environment-friendly services, pollution control, and safe waste management from ships, while adhering to international environmental and safety standards, building climate-resilient infrastructure, and promoting the use of renewable energy.

Tarique also showed the importance of making Mongla Port more appealing to international shipping companies and developing it as a first-call port under suitable commercial and operational conditions.

Several ministers attended the event, including Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam. Also present were State Minister for Shipping Razib Ahsan and State Minister for Environment Shaikh Faridul Islam. Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mustafa spoke.
